Pachyphytum - Rzedowski
The Pachyphytum rzedowskii is a charming and relatively rare succulent belonging to the Crassulaceae family. It's a delightful species known for its unique appearance and relatively easy care.
Origin:
- Native to Mexico, specifically found in the state of Michoacán.
- It grows primarily in desert or dry shrubland biomes.
- The species was described in 2002 and named after the renowned Mexican botanist of Polish descent, Jerzy Rzedowski.
Appearance & Characteristics:
- Leaves: The most striking feature is its thick, fleshy, and somewhat cylindrical leaves with slightly pointed tips. These leaves are often described as resembling "baby fingers," hence one of its common names.
- Faceted Texture: The leaves have distinct facets, creating a multi-dimensional, jewel-like effect.
- Farina: The leaves are covered in a beautiful powdery white coating (farina), which gives them a soft, pale blue-green or silvery-gray hue. This farina protects the plant from intense sunlight and should be handled carefully as it can be smudged.
- Coloration: When properly exposed to sunlight, Pachyphytum rzedowskii can develop wonderful pink or purplish shades, making it even more ornamental. The bases of the leaves often show a pinkish tint.
- Rosettes: The leaves are arranged in tight, compact rosettes at the apex of slender stems. These rosettes together form a soft and delicate cushion-like structure that can sometimes trail or cascade.
- Stems: The stems can be creeping or trailing, reaching up to 30 cm (12 inches) long and about 1-1.5 cm in diameter. Over time, the stems may become woody, adding to its character.
- Flowers: It produces delicate, bell-shaped flowers arranged in a scorpioid cyme inflorescence that can be 9-25 cm (4-10 inches) long. The petals are typically greenish-blue at the base with red speckles inside. The primary bloom color is often listed as white or cream with green accents.
- Size: The plant typically grows to be 20-30 cm (8-12 inches) in height and width.
Care:
- Light: Pachyphytum rzedowskii thrives in bright, indirect sunlight or gentle morning sun. It can tolerate full sun, especially during cooler parts of the day, but should be protected from harsh afternoon sun, which can scorch the leaves. Adequate light is crucial for maintaining the vibrant coloration and compact growth.
- Water: Like most succulents, it prefers infrequent watering. Allow the soil to dry out completely between waterings to prevent root rot. Water thoroughly when you do water, ensuring excess water drains away quickly. Reduce watering significantly during the dormant winter months.
- Soil: It requires a very well-draining cactus or succulent mix. Adding extra mineral grit such as coarse sand, pumice, or perlite (50-70% of the mix) is highly beneficial to improve drainage and aeration.
- Temperature: It prefers warm, dry conditions and is not frost-tolerant. Protect it from freezing temperatures (below -6°C or 20°F). Ideal temperatures range from 20-38°C (68-100°F). It's recommended to keep it above 8°C (46°F) during winter.
- Humidity: Average household humidity is usually sufficient.
- Potting: Use containers with drainage holes to prevent waterlogging.
- Fertilization: It does not need frequent fertilization. A diluted balanced succulent fertilizer applied once or twice during the spring and summer growing season is usually enough. Avoid over-fertilizing.
- Propagation: Easily propagated by leaf cuttings or stem cuttings. Allow the cuttings to callus over for a few days before planting them in well-draining soil. Keep the soil slightly moist until roots develop.
Other Notable Aspects:
- Rarity: Pachyphytum rzedowskii is considered relatively rare in cultivation, making it a sought-after plant for collectors.
- Low Maintenance: Once established, it is a drought-tolerant and low-maintenance plant.
- Pet Safety: Pachyphytum species are generally considered pet-safe.
The Pachyphytum rzedowskii is a delightful and unique succulent prized for its plump, faceted leaves covered in a powdery coating and its potential for beautiful pink hues. Its relatively easy care requirements, coupled with its distinctive appearance, make it a wonderful addition to any succulent collection.
