Delosperma - Lehmanni aka Ice Plant

Let's explore the captivating world of Delosperma lehmannii, a delightful succulent groundcover that brings a burst of sunshine to any garden. With its vibrant blooms and easy-care nature, this resilient plant is a fantastic addition for both novice and experienced gardeners alike.

Key Features

Delosperma lehmannii, often called the Lehmann's Ice Plant, is a low-growing succulent characterized by its fleshy, cylindrical leaves that are typically a bright green. However, the real showstopper is its profusion of daisy-like flowers that appear in abundance from spring through fall, and sometimes even longer in mild climates. These blooms come in a range of dazzling colors, including brilliant yellows, oranges, pinks, and even bicolors, creating a vibrant carpet of color. The flowers typically open during the day in bright sunlight and close at night or during overcast conditions, a characteristic shared by many ice plants. This species is known for its relatively compact growth habit, usually reaching only a few inches in height but spreading outwards to form a dense mat. Its drought tolerance and ability to thrive in poor soils make it a remarkably adaptable plant.

Care

Caring for Delosperma lehmannii is quite straightforward, making it a popular choice for low-maintenance landscapes.

  • Light: This ice plant thrives in full sun. Ample sunlight is crucial for abundant flowering and to maintain the vibrancy of its foliage. Aim for at least 6 hours of direct sunlight per day.
  • Soil: Well-draining soil is paramount. Like most succulents, Delosperma lehmannii is susceptible to root rot if it sits in soggy conditions. A sandy or gravelly soil mix is ideal. If your garden soil is heavy clay, amend it with sand or perlite to improve drainage.
  • Watering: Once established, Lehmann's Ice Plant is quite drought-tolerant. Water sparingly, allowing the soil to dry out completely between waterings. Overwatering is a more common problem than underwatering. During the active growing season (spring and summer), you might water every couple of weeks, but reduce this frequency significantly during the dormant winter months.
  • Temperature: Delosperma lehmannii is generally hardy in USDA zones 6-10, tolerating a range of temperatures. However, it's essential to check the specific hardiness for your local climate. While it can handle some frost, prolonged periods of freezing temperatures, especially in combination with wet soil, can be detrimental.
  • Fertilizing: This plant is not a heavy feeder and generally doesn't require much fertilization. If you choose to fertilize, do so sparingly in the spring with a balanced, diluted liquid fertilizer. Avoid high-nitrogen fertilizers, as they can promote excessive foliage growth at the expense of flowers.

Maintenance

Maintaining Delosperma lehmannii is minimal. Deadheading spent flowers can encourage further blooming and keep the plant looking tidy, although it's not strictly necessary. As it spreads, you may want to trim the edges to maintain its shape or prevent it from encroaching on other plants. In very cold climates, providing some winter protection, such as a layer of mulch, can be beneficial, especially for younger plants. Regularly inspect the plant for any signs of pests or diseases, although these are not typically major concerns for well-cared-for ice plants. Good air circulation, provided by proper spacing, can help prevent fungal issues.

Propagation

Delosperma lehmannii is relatively easy to propagate through several methods:

  • Stem Cuttings: This is a straightforward and common method. Take 2-4 inch stem cuttings in spring or summer, ensuring they have at least one or two sets of leaves. Allow the cut ends to callus over for a day or two in a dry, shady spot. Then, plant the cuttings in well-draining potting mix or directly into the ground. Keep the soil lightly moist until roots develop, which usually takes a few weeks.
  • Division: Mature clumps can be carefully divided in spring or early summer. Gently dig up the plant and separate it into smaller sections, ensuring each division has a healthy set of roots and foliage. Replant the divisions immediately in their new locations.
  • Seed: While possible, propagating from seed can be slower. Sow seeds indoors in early spring or directly outdoors after the last frost in well-draining soil. Keep the soil consistently moist until germination occurs.

Delosperma lehmannii stands out as a vibrant, low-maintenance succulent groundcover that offers a spectacular display of colorful flowers. Its resilience, drought tolerance, and ease of propagation make it a valuable and attractive addition to rock gardens, borders, containers, and any sunny spot where a splash of long-lasting color is desired.
