The striking Agave Dragon Toes Variegated, also known as Agave pygmaea 'Dragon Toes Variegated', is a unique and eye-catching succulent plant that is prized for its stunning appearance and low-maintenance nature. Here are some key features of this plant.
It's leaves are thick, fleshy, and triangular, growing in a tight rosette formation. They are a beautiful blue-green color with distinctive white or cream-colored variegation along the margins. The leaf edges are lined with small spines, giving them a "toothy" appearance reminiscent of dragon's toes. This variety is a relatively small agave, typically growing up to 12 inches in height and width, making it perfect for containers or small gardens. Mature plants may produce a tall flower stalk with yellow or greenish-yellow flowers, but this is a rare occurrence in indoor settings.
Growing Conditions:
- Light: Agave Dragon Toes Variegated thrives in full sun to partial shade. In very hot climates, some afternoon shade is recommended to prevent leaf scorching.
- Soil: It requires well-drained soil, such as a cactus or succulent mix, to prevent root rot.
- Watering: This plant is extremely drought-tolerant. Water deeply but infrequently, allowing the soil to dry out completely between waterings. Overwatering is the most common cause of problems for this plant.
- Temperature: It is hardy to about 25°F (-4°C), but should be protected from frost.
